A Multi-Generational Home with a Courtyard Pool.

This house is designed for a multi-generational family: parents, 2 children and grandchildren with a total of 3 family units. Issues such as privacy and connectivity are addressed in this project.

The house consists of 13 bedrooms, 3 living areas, 3 dining areas, distributed across the 1st and 2nd storey to allow for multiple families to co-exist separately. Each "family zone" has its own entry route, creating its own zone like an own apartment within the house. These "family zones" wrap around a central courtyard which serves also to bring views, light and air to the private living areas. This central courtyard, with a swimming pool, is an internalised well-shielded private space for the family to interact, away from the eyes of the neighbours and the public, providing the family with privacy from the 2 public streets this plot faces.

To allow for interaction between families, common facilities (such as swimming pool, formal living and dining area with high ceiling, gardens and koi ponds, casual outdoor dining verandah, gym, home theatre, kids play rooms, gym, roof BBQ dining and even meeting room, etc), are designed across the basement, ground floor and attic.

The design is inspired by the beauty of butterfly wings and by petals of a flower. Each wing/petal articulates a zone for the families. Functionally, these forms help carve spaces for balconies and voids for skylights into the basement. Above the attic, a large sweeping roof covers entire house bringing all the spaces conceptually under one roof. These curvaceuos sculpted forms break the scale of the large house, creating soft elegant lines that outline an iconic form for this large bungalow.
